Acknowledgments
First and foremost, I am deeply indebted to the authors of the previous versions of this text. Their foundational work, acknowledged throughout the license and attribution sections of this book, has been indispensable.
I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Open Oregon Educational Resources team. A special thank you goes to Maggie Frankel, who has earned the honorary title of Professor of Criminal Justice.
To my students, whose drive and determination have been a constant source of inspiration, thank you. Your resilience in the face of adversity and your relentless pursuit of dreams have fueled my commitment to completing this project, even when it seemed overwhelming.
This book, particularly Chapter Six, is dedicated to the family of Sergeant John Lawrence of the Bend Police Department, who died in the line of duty in 2014. John’s family, along with the families of the more than 23,000 police officers who have died in the line of duty since 1786, bear the profound weight of their loved ones’ sacrifices. It is my hope that this educational resource contributes, even in a small way, to making the demanding and dangerous job of policing just a bit safer.
Lastly, I extend my deepest thanks to my own family. Jett, Presley, and Mac, thank you for giving up precious time with me to see this project to completion. To my husband Erick, thank you for your constant encouragement and your commitment to donning the uniform. And to Ranger, the world’s cutest golden doodle, thank you for keeping my feet warm throughout the process.
