Instructions Sample 3: Basic MIG Welding Guide
The following instructions are a basic guide to help you with the following: 1.) setting up a MIG welder, 2.) performing a basic weld, and 3.) inspecting a completed weld.
1. Setting Up a MIG Welder
Steps:
- Ensure the welding machine is turned off and unplugged.
- Connect the grounding clamp to a clean, unpainted metal surface.
- Install the correct wire spool for the job.
- Feed the welding wire through the drive rollers and into the torch.
- Attach the shielding gas cylinder and open the valve slowly.
- Set the voltage and wire feed speed according to the material specifications.
Safety Notes:
- Wear a welding helmet, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing.
- Ensure adequate ventilation before starting work.
2. Performing a Basic MIG Weld
Steps:
- Position the materials to be welded and secure them with clamps.
- Turn on the welding machine.
- Hold the welding torch at a 10–15 degree angle.
- Pull the trigger to start the arc.
- Move the torch steadily along the joint at a consistent speed.
- Release the trigger to stop the weld.
Quality Check:
- Inspect the weld bead for even width and smooth appearance.
- Look for defects such as gaps or excessive spatter.
3. Inspecting a Completed Weld
Steps:
- Allow the welded material to cool completely.
- Clean the weld area using a wire brush.
- Examine the weld for cracks, porosity, or undercutting.
- Measure the weld size using a gauge if required.
- Record inspection results according to company procedures.
Important:
- Report any defects to a supervisor before proceeding.
