2.1 Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

In Chapter 1, you were introduced to the history of human development and some of the equity issues that impact children and their families. A historical perspective of childhood was explored, including discussing childhood as a social construction. In this chapter, you will learn how researchers use social constructions to organize or explain aspects of their study and work. This helps them ground big ideas or themes in ways that the general population can understand. We will also take a look at how theory and research is created and adapted based on cultural and knowledge shifts. This textbook covers several theories for each of the ages and stages of childhood. We will discuss those theories, the researchers, as well as explore the limitations and biases within each theoretical framework.

2.1.1 Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize how theories are developed and applied in research and study design.
  2. Identify the major developmental theories used throughout the textbook.

2.1.2 Key Terms

Throughout this chapter, you will be introduced to important key terms that will help deepen your understanding of human development.

  • Empirical evidence: Research that produces consistent and verifiable results
  • Hypothesis-an educated guess used in research
  • Qualitative research: involves collecting non-numeric data in order to understand or explain big concepts or human perspectives
  • Quantitative research: involves measuring phenomena by collecting numerical data
  • Self actualization: a concept in Maslow’s theory that describes the ability for one to reach their full potential and desires
  • Self efficacy: the belief in one’s ability to accomplish tasks and goals
  • Theory: an explanation of behaviors or actions based on research data or evidence
  • Transcendence: a concept in Maslow’s theory that describes the highest level of the human experience in which one relates to a higher goal outside of oneself
