Book Description
This cross-disciplinary text considers the management and treatment of those with mental disorders within the criminal justice system. Students will gain an understanding of and appreciation for their diverse communities as they explore how people with mental disorders interact with law enforcement, the criminal courts, and the correctional system. With an emphasis on the importance of avoiding criminalization of mental disorders, this text challenges students to prioritize individual needs and community safety by looking for solutions outside of the criminal justice system. Additionally, the text introduces students to the array of careers across the behavioral health and criminal justice disciplines, with attention to the rewards and challenges inherent in these helping professions. As an Oregon open educational resource, the text connects students to local history, applicable state laws, and Oregon programs and practices of interest. The content aims to embrace diversity and highlight the importance of equitable and inclusive practices among all professionals in the criminal justice arena.
