Y1 Unit 1.1: Learning Objectives and Overview

Learning Objectives

  1. Locate the online documents where you’ll collaborate with your team.
  2. Discuss the Open Curriculum Development Project Criteria for Success.
  3. Contextualize your course with your background scan.
  4. Draft an author bio and get to know each other.

Overview

Thank you for embarking on an Open Curriculum Development Project with us!

As you read in Unit 0, the first six units of this training, including the one that you’re about to read, are our Textbook Accelerator. As the name suggests, this phase of the project will be intense as we gain momentum towards writing the first chapters of your book. Please make space in your schedule and be prepared to take in and integrate new information in each unit, in addition to working on your project. Note: this is the heaviest reading unit of the Textbook Accelerator because you’ll start looking at material linked in your background scan.

We will present a moderate amount of content in each unit, not only because there’s a limit to the information you can absorb, but also because we need to give you time to do your work. There will be times when you look back and think that you could have done part of the process better if you knew more at the time. It’s okay to be nonlinear; revision cycles are built into plan.

In this unit, you will get started on your project right away, working in your team’s shared documents. You’ll get a big-picture look at where we are heading and the equity-minded design frameworks we’ll use to get there, and you will start to define your curriculum by looking at what already exists in your field.

You might notice that we will use the terms “open” and “openly licensed” without providing definitions yet. We will get there in the next unit. Now, read on for an introduction to the project and your first steps towards creating an open curriculum.

Task List With Time Estimates

Each unit begins with an overview of the tasks for the unit, along with how long we expect each task to take. Everything that we ask you to do in the unit is captured in this list, in the order that it appears in the unit. Please complete all the tasks in the list before our first meeting.
