Y1 Unit 1.4: Open Curriculum Example Chapter and Course Pack

It’s helpful to see an example of the thing you are going to create: openly licensed textbooks and fully integrated course packs. Starting at the end of the process may add perspective on what is most important to the project. This section walks you through an example of what an end point of this process might look like.

Open Textbook Example Chapter

Your open textbook will be published in Pressbooks, an online publishing platform. Pressbooks makes your open textbook easy to discover, use, and share. Open Oregon Educational Resources manages its own Pressbooks instance. We will handle all the technical aspects of moving your manuscript from Google Docs to Pressbooks. We built this training in Pressbooks to help you orient to the platform and to preview what students will experience with your open textbook.

Here are a few advantages of using Pressbooks:

  • The link to your book is public. This means students have immediate and ongoing access to content.
  • Each page in a Pressbook has a unique link so anyone can easily share individual sections.
  • Pressbooks can be exported to downloadable formats for offline reading and for print copies of chapters.

The Example Chapter for the Open Curriculum Development Project [Website] allows authors to tour a chapter from SOC 204: Sociology of Everyday Life by Matt Gougherty and Jennifer Puentes, Sociology faculty members at Eastern Oregon University. The chapter is annotated to point out equity-minded design strategies and choices. This interactive is accessible to people who use screen reader software. Required chapter elements include chapter sections, chapter openers, embedded interactives and open-ended reflection prompts, spotlights, figures, and chapter closers.
