Y1 Unit 9.1: Learning Objectives and Overview
Learning Objectives:
- Evaluate effective and ineffective strategies in drafting your first chapter to get better at drafting the full manuscript.
- Develop a revising mindset.
- Implement Chapter Draft Revision Actions for inclusive writing in support of our project criteria for success.
Overview
At the end of Unit 8, you hit another major project milestone – your first chapter draft is complete. Congratulations!
We’re going to build on your success as we begin Unit 9, which is a 3-month unit. In this unit, we share advice for getting started on your next chapter while your first chapter is with your Developmental Editor. One month into this unit, you will receive the Developmental Editor’s feedback, so the next section is about logistics and strategies for revision. And last, we explain what goes into the full manuscript that you’ll hand in at the end of Unit 9.
Lead Authors have an additional task to prepare for the team meeting with your Developmental Editor. They read all the chapters that were submitted in order to understand the progress of the project as a whole.
By the end of this unit, your team will be ready for the Full Manuscript Developmental Edit. If any chapter draft isn’t 80 percent complete at the end of Unit 9, it will not advance for developmental editing, will not be piloted with students in Year 2, and will not receive peer review. Authors will likely need to dedicate more hours per week than usual to meet this deadline, so reach out to the Project Manager to schedule realistic benchmarks for progress. Lead Authors, in particular, may be writing more than one chapter during this unit. Extensions are not an option at this stage of the project.
After this 3-month unit, you will have another 3 months during Unit 10 to respond to the next round of feedback from the Developmental Editor and get your book ready to pilot with students.
