Subject: Seeking contributing authors for Introduction to Human Services: An Equity Lens

Hi all,

Open Oregon Educational Resources is developing an openly-licensed textbook and course for Introduction to Human Services: An Equity Lens. More info about this grant-funded project: https://openoregon.org/were-on-our-way-targeted-open-pathways-for-hdfs-and-soc/

We are seeking contributing authors to write subchapters of about 5,000-7,000 words each for compensation ranging from $1000-$2000 depending on scope. We are looking for contributing authors with expertise in one or more of these settings or populations:

  • Criminal Justice Settings
  • Military and Veteran Services
  • Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders
  • People with Disabilities

For each of these chapters, content will be appropriate for students in an introductory course. It will include:

  • equity, diversity and inclusion framework
  • the settings where services take place
  • the kinds of needs and issues that the population faces
  • systemic challenges and strengths
  • the kinds of jobs/careers relevant to this setting/population
  • introduction to theories primarily used with this setting/population

For each of these chapters, there is an existing openly licensed source that can be used as a foundation and/or excerpted to include in the chapter. Contributing authors will work with the Lead Author to design the chapter outline and for feedback. Editorial support and peer review is also provided.

If you or anyone you know may be interested, please contact Amy Hofer at hofera@linnbenton.edu. Amy can also answer questions and provide information about the project, timeline, author role, and compensation.

Thanks for considering,

Amy

Contacts for Openly Licensed Multimedia Content Creation

Hi all,

Open Oregon Educational Resources would like to compile a pool of contacts that we can reach out to when we need to create multimedia content, such as charts, graphics, photos, videos, animations, and so on. Videographers, video editors, graphic designers, artists, and anyone interested in content creation are encouraged to submit the interest form. Funding is available to compensate creators for their work.

Content creators will retain their copyright but will share their work with a Creative Commons open license.

This will be an open pool, but we hope to compile expressions of interest before April 1. We are especially interested in hearing from people in Oregon; with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; students and early-career professionals are welcome. Individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives are strongly encouraged to apply: https://forms.gle/aHRereifcmjqc2UA9

Thanks,

Amy

Initial contact with media developer (are they interested/available)

Hi Stacie,

I hope your week is going well!

I have another media development request, and I’m curious if you might be interested or available.

This is for an openly licensed textbook about development from infant to adolescence, and the author wants to create a chart of illustration that communicates what it means to get and give consent based on the different ages and stages of human development, ranging from infant-emerging adulthood. She has the information she wants to include and “a few poorly sketched ideas about how she wants it to look.”

  • We would start with a consultation with you, the author and Veronica to define the purpose of the visual and for the author to provide you with the source information.
  • We typically do two rounds of feedback, one on an initial draft and one on the final draft before publishing.
  • We are wondering about an end of April deadline but can be flexible.
  • We want our designs to be accessible and have created the Accessibility Checklist for Charts, Graphs, and Maps to help clarify what that means.
  • You will openly license your work for this project. I’m happy to answer questions about this!

Thanks for considering it!

Phoebe

Hi Kate,

I hope this email finds you well! Thank you for expressing interest in working with Open Oregon Educational Resources on media development projects.

We have identified a new project and wanted to reach out to you about your interest and availability in working with us over summer 2022.

We need a {role} to create an openly-licensed {type of project} for {topic of project}. This {type of project} will be prepared for inclusion in open textbooks we’re developing for {discipline}. {Description of project}

Would you be interested in partnering with us for this project? If so, would you please let us know your availability for summer 2022?

Thanks, Kate!

Veronica

Hi Colin,

I hope this email finds you well! Thank you for expressing interest in working with Open Oregon Educational Resources on media development projects!

We have identified a new project and wanted to reach out to you about your interest and availability in working with us over summer 2022.

We need a videographer to create an openly-licensed, 5-7 minute video that will be used in two books: Contemporary Families and Social Problems. The authors are hoping to create a video to replace one that is no longer available on YouTube. They have the outline of the content, and the first step would be to have a 30-minute consultation with the authors and our instructional designer to determine the outcome, budget, and timeline for this project.

Would you be interested and available to partner with us for this project, to be completed around mid-September?

Thanks, Colin!

Manuscript Peer Review

Subject: Peer review for {{course name}} manuscript – due {{deadline}}

Dear {{reviewer name}},

Thank you for your interest in being a peer reviewer on a textbook manuscript in progress for {{course name}}. Your teaching and professional expertise will bring valuable contributions to this project. For more information about the project, visit Institutions Across Oregon Pilot Open Curricula.

On this project, being a peer reviewer means:

  1. Reading the entire textbook manuscript, available here: {{review copy link}}
  2. Completing a review via a Google form: {{form link}} by {{deadline}}
  3. Optionally adding comments in-line on the manuscript document

Once your form is submitted, we will begin the process to compensate you $500 for your time.

Peer Reviewers are expected to follow the Open Oregon Educational Resources Community Guidelines when participating in the peer review process. The guidelines are pasted below this message.

Your review will ensure that the materials will be widely relevant in Oregon. In particular we want to ensure that the project succeeds by providing high-quality content with an equity lens. Note that this manuscript has not been professionally copyedited; that will occur at a later date. Please focus your comments on content and approach rather than punctuation and grammar.

Your review will be submitted via Google Form. While you will be credited as a reviewer in the published book, your review responses will be anonymous to the author unless you choose to identify yourself. The Google Form is the primary feedback mode that will guide revision of the text. Substantive comments and important points to convey belong in your form responses. This is how we will confirm your review for payment.

Optionally, you can also use the commenting function in Google Docs to leave supplemental feedback directly in the manuscript that addresses concerns. Your name will be connected with your comments. Multiple reviewers and textbook authors will have access to this document. This space is for supplemental feedback only. Please use the Google form as your primary method for providing feedback.

Optional comments in the manuscript should use this shorthand:

Shorthand Explanation
EQUITY Content has the potential to cause harm to historically underrepresented or marginalized groups. Please elaborate and suggest an alternative.
UPDATE Content, disciplinary approach, media, or scholarship is out of date. Please suggest an alternative source with a link.
CORRECT Content or media is inaccurate, unclear, or imprecise. Please suggest a correction.
FOCUS Overly detailed information gets too much into the weeds for an introductory student audience. Highlight sentence, paragraph, or section as needed.
ADD Content, approach, media, or scholarship is missing an essential term, concept, or explanation. Please elaborate.

Thanks,

Phoebe

Hello all,

We are so pleased to share that the course pilot version of Introduction to the American Criminal Justice System is now in Pressbooks! Congratulations one and all 💫 🎉 💃

We are so grateful to our author team for their dedication to this project, to our Chemeketa Press partners and wonderful leadership team for their support, and to our skilled instructional technologist, Jonathan!

As this is a pre-publication version, please don’t share the link outside of course pilots for our grant program. We will have a launch Pressbook in spring 2024 that incorporates chapter feedback from instructors, students, and peer reviewers.

To our Pilot Instructors, this link is ready to incorporate into course development and to share with your course pilot students: https://openoregon.pressbooks.pub/crimjustsysintro/.

Complete chapter feedback form – sent to Pilot Instructors in week 0

Subject: Please complete OER chapter feedback form (you and your students)

Dear Tamara,

Thank you so much for your work piloting our Open Educational Resource (OER) in your Thriving Development class!

You have probably seen that there is a chapter feedback form – https://forms.gle/Scaan3MXHKyP6AB58 – at the end of each chapter in the OER textbook. This is our primary method of gathering feedback about the text from you and your students. This feedback has so much potential for informing the final version of the book.

We have two requests to ask of you. Your help will make a huge difference to the success of our project:

  • As a pilot instructor, we would like you to complete the form each week about how you used the text and what we should know for revision. There is a lot of flexibility in the questions for you to share your thoughts.
  • What your students think matters! Please provide your students a link with the form each week to give us their take on the book. If you already use a weekly check on their reading, this could even replace that!

Thank you so much for your help with this important part of our feedback process.

Phoebe

P.S. I’ll send out a weekly reminder about this!
