Overview
Welcome! We are so glad that you are here.
This unit provides an overview of the Open Curriculum Development Project. We ask all participants to start here for an introduction to the entire project. Then go on to the next unit assigned to you to get started.
We estimate that it will take you less than 30 minutes to read this unit.
Open Curriculum Development Project Goal
In three years, we will be ready to share high-quality openly licensed textbooks and course packs that we feel confident other Oregon instructors will want to use in their courses.
These course materials will remove barriers for students. All of the materials will be available for free online or in print at low cost. They will be designed with an equity lens, improving students’ motivation and sense of belonging in the course.
These course materials will also remove barriers for instructors. They will be aligned to Oregon learning outcomes. The course packs (also known as ancillary materials) provide course plans and assessments that reduce the workload of changing course materials.
We work in cohorts that develop materials for four courses at a time. The courses are related to the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission’s statewide initiatives to align learning outcomes, curriculum pathways, and workforce development – for example through Common Course Numbering [Website] or Major Transfer Maps [Website].
Project History
The Open Curriculum Development Project was originally funded by grants through Governor’s Emergency Education Relief funding and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) in the U.S. Department of Education (80 percent of the total cost of the program was funded by FIPSE, with the remaining 20 percent representing in-kind personnel costs funded by Open Oregon Educational Resources). However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.
The design of our model responded to the priorities and requirements of the 2020 Open Textbooks Pilot Program [Website]. In particular, by sharing our open curriculum development model, we are meeting the dissemination goal of the grant program.
