Unit 0.3: Open Curriculum Development Project Timeline

The Open Curriculum Development Project is a three-year model that begins with the Textbook Accelerator and ends with the launch of our textbooks and course packs.

Figures 0.1-0.3, below, show an overview of the project tracks across all three years. The sections that follow break down each year’s activities in more detail.

Figure 0.1 The Textbook Development Track of the Open Curriculum Development Project begins with an Accelerator Course, which helps author teams to outline and start to draft a manuscript. After a period of development, cleanup, and peer review, revising authors prepare final revisions.
Project Phases for Textbook Development Dates Duration
Textbook Accelerator Year 1, Week 1-8 2 months
Textbook Manuscript Development Year 1, Month 3-11 9 months
Textbook Manuscript Cleanup Year 2, TBD depending on when you have capacity 4 months minimum
Textbook Revision Year 3, Months 1-5 5 months
Figure 0.2 The Course Development Track of the Open Curriculum Development Project begins with the textbook drafted during Year 1. Pilot instructors collaborate with an instructional designer to design, pilot, and revise course materials that integrate with the new open textbook.
Project Phases for Course Pack Development Dates Duration
Course Accelerator Year 2, TBD depending on which term you teach the course 4 weeks minimum
Course Pilot Year 2, TBD depending on which term you teach the course 10 weeks
Course Materials Revision Year 2-3, TBD depending on which term you teach the course 8 weeks
Figure 0.3 The final phase for both textbook and course pack development takes place in Year 3. The open textbook manuscript is finalized for import into Pressbooks and open course packs are aligned with the final version. All materials ready to share widely!
Final Project Phase for Textbook and Course Pack Development Dates Duration
Production and Launch Year 3, Month 6-12 6 months

Year 1: Drafting and Development

The Textbook Accelerator (figure 0.4) takes place during the first two months of Year 1. The goal of the Textbook Accelerator is to complete a “{Course #} About This Book” planning document. In the Textbook Accelerator, authors will:

  • Complete Year 1, Units 1-6.
  • Meet with your author team and Project Manager weekly.
  • Attend online meetings weekly with your cohort and support team.

Unit Number and Name Dates Duration
Unit 0 Introduction to the Open Curriculum Development Project Week 1-2 2 weeks
Year 1, Unit 1 Laying the Groundwork Week 1-2 2 weeks
Year 1, Unit 2 Openly Licensed Course Materials Week 3 1 week

Year 1, Unit 4 Textbook and Chapter Structure Week 5 1 week
Year 1, Unit 5 Preparing for Preliminary Review Week 6-7 2 weeks
Year 1, Unit 6 Starting a Chapter Draft Week 8 1 week

The goal for the rest of Year 1 (figure 0.5) is to have a draft of your textbook that is ready to be piloted in classrooms. During this time authors will:

  • Complete Year 1, Units 7-10.
  • Meet regularly with your author team and Project Manager.
  • Meet once per unit with your cohort and support team.

Two months of Textbook Accelerator + nine months of drafting = one year? Yes! We use Month 12 to import your manuscript into Pressbooks so that it can be piloted with students during Year 2.

Year 2: Piloting and Manuscript Cleanup

In Year 2, Pilot Instructors design and teach courses with an equity lens, with the assistance of the Instructional Designer. Some Pilot Instructors are brand-new to this project, and some are authors who have been here for a year already.

Course pack development (figure 0.6) is completed individually by Pilot Instructors on a rolling basis during Year 2. You must start the Course Accelerator (Units 2-4) a minimum of 4 weeks before the term you will teach the course. The goal of the Course Accelerator is to prepare to teach a course that aligns with one of our open textbook manuscripts. After the pilot term ends, you will revise your course materials so that they can be shared with an open license. In the course pack development units, Pilot Instructors will:

  • Complete Year 2, Units 1-5.
  • Meet with the Instructional Designer at least once per unit.

Meanwhile, authors continue manuscript development, but they also take a break from active writing this year. Each author team member makes four passes through their chapters in order to clean up the manuscript and prepare for handoff to the Revising Author (figure 0.7). During this time authors will:

  • Complete Year 2, Units 6-9.
  • Meet regularly with your Project Manager.

Year 3: Revising, Production, and Marketing

In Year 3, Revising Authors use the feedback gathered in Year 2 to finalize the textbook manuscripts (figure 0.8). Then our team will prepare your book for launch (figure 0.9). We will also prepare aligned course packs from select course pilots so that we can share a complete equity-minded curriculum for future instructors to adopt and adapt. When we launch each curriculum, we will do our best to share materials like press releases and other assets to raise awareness among interested colleagues.

We will prepare a new Pressbook for Early Adoption Instructors to use. The Year 3 Pressbook reflects the revisions that the author team made in Year 2.
