Y1 Unit 10.1: Learning Objectives and Overview

Learning Objectives

  1. Create front and back matter to support pilot students and future instructors.
  2. Develop peer review questions with your author team in consultation with the Project Manager.
  3. Implement Chapter Draft Revision Actions from the Full Manuscript Developmental Edit.
  4. Assess your manuscript formatting, readability, accessibility, and completion using the Chapter Self-Review.
  5. Develop open pedagogy topics for instructors to consider when designing course assessments.

Overview

Welcome to the last unit of Year 1. You made it! And the first thing that most authors will do during Unit 10 is… take a break from your chapters.

For the first two weeks of this unit, Lead Authors prepare all chapters for the full manuscript developmental edit. After that, your Developmental Editor will have 4 weeks to prepare feedback for the author team. During this 6-week period, do not make any changes or edits to your Google Docs until you receive an email letting you know that the developmental edit is complete. If Google alerts you to changes in your documents, please don’t respond to comments or accept changes. The Lead Author and Developmental Editor need to work in a stable chapter document.

During this time, teams will draft the front and back matter sections that appear before and after the main body of your book. Teams will also decide on the questions you will ask peer reviewers to respond to and identify peer reviewers. Authors who will pilot courses can work ahead on their course development. Authors can also work on media development requests if they have identified gaps in content for their figures.

After you receive your full manuscript developmental edit feedback, authors will finish revisions so we can import your book into Pressbooks for course pilots. The goal for this phase of the project is to resolve outstanding issues in your manuscript so that your book can be piloted by students and instructors. Two weeks before the end of this unit, all chapters will be reviewed by the Lead Author.

Next, we have a major transition into Year 2 of this project. As we shift gears, authors will have another chance to take a breather after a very intense year of writing, including three cycles of review and revision. What a major milestone! Congratulations to everyone on the team!
