Y2 Unit 2.1: Learning Objectives and Overview

Learning Objectives

  1. Locate essential shared folders and shared documents for course development.
  2. Discuss the purpose and the function of a course map.
  3. Determine personal goals for your upcoming instructional design consultations.
  4. Describe the benefits of Transparency in Learning and Teaching.

Overview

Thank you for signing up to be a pilot instructor! You’re at the beginning of a three-unit Course Accelerator (Year 2, Units 2-4). In these units, you will design a course that aligns with the pilot edition of an open textbook manuscript.

While you teach, you’ll keep track of what works well and what can be improved in your course design. After the pilot, you’ll come back to this curriculum and complete Year 2, Unit 5 to revise the course materials that you decide to share with an open license.

Pilot Instructors must start the Course Accelerator a minimum of four weeks before they start teaching their course. If you only have four weeks, then you’ll complete Units 2 and 3 in one week each and spend 2 weeks on Unit 4. If you have more time, you will work with your Instructional Designer to spread out the workload, which we recommend. If possible, use the entire term before you teach to design your course. The Course Accelerator is designed to be accessed on a rolling basis, when it’s relevant to you.

Course development begins with your deliverable for this unit: adding your course description, course-level learning outcomes, module topics, and weekly learning objectives to your course map. You will also consider learning objectives from each chapter of the pilot textbook, as well as any required course-level outcomes from your own institution. Let’s get started!
