Y2 Unit 3.1: Learning Objectives and Overview
Learning Objectives
- Discuss basic concepts of assessment design, including scoping, scaffolding, and formative and summative assessment.
- Apply Transparency in Learning and Teaching and Culturally Responsive Teaching to a sample assignment and rubric.
- Examine sample equity-minded assessments from previous course pilots.
- Summarize barriers and solutions that students encounter with informed consent for open licensing.
Overview
Now that you’ve completed the preliminary sections of your course map and met with your instructional designer, you’re ready to think about assessment. Perhaps more than anything else in your course, your assessments reflect your beliefs about how students learn. Our goal for assessments is to honor diverse knowledge-making practices.
Your deliverables in this unit are the assessments and feedback columns in your course map, which will show how students demonstrate and get feedback on their achievement of learning objectives you developed in Unit 2. You will also draft one assignment and rubric for your Instructional Designer to review that uses strategies from Culturally Responsive Teaching and Transparency in Teaching and Learning. This unit also offers the option to begin an open pedagogy project for inclusion in the next version of the open textbook.
