Y2 Unit 4.6: Pilot Phase

The Course Accelerator units so far have prepared you to get to the beginning of the term. During the pilot phase, while you are teaching your course, you will focus on your students. We’ll come back to more time-intensive activities in the post-pilot phase, when you revise your course. In the meantime, you have 2 to-dos during the pilot phase listed on the {Instructor} {Course #} Course Development Timeline and Deliverables document.

First, we ask you to complete the {Course #} Chapter Level Feedback survey that uses the same form link as the survey that your students fill out. Use the drop-down menu at the beginning of the survey to indicate that you are an instructor. The instructor version of the form asks you to provide feedback on how to improve the textbook. The survey also asks you to include weekly notes on the course design itself. You will encounter the following question on the survey:

Write any “notes to self” here that you want to remember when you revise your course materials at the end of the term. Your Instructional Designer will help you access these notes. (You may also be keeping your own notes somewhere else.)

If you choose to keep weekly notes in a separate location, be sure to copy them over to this form so that they are accessible to you and your Instructional Designer after the term is over.

Second, your Instructional Designer will schedule a meeting with you to fill out the {Instructor} {Course #} Midterm Pilot Check-in document. It’s best to meet together to slow down, reflect on the term, and take the pulse of your course. It is possible to complete the check-in by email, but you lose the opportunity for real-time engagement with a dedicated professional who wants to help you succeed. Instructors often find that this time brings some relief from the stress of the term. Save an hour on both your calendars about 5 weeks into the pilot. You’ll discuss design strengths to date, what you know you want to do differently next time, and immediate changes for the second half of the term so that students are set up for success.

We’ll see you again in the next unit after you pilot your course!
