Y2 Unit 9.2: Fourth Pass: Licenses, Attributions, and References Cleanup
Of all the passes, this one requires the most careful attention to detail and formatting. We recommend breaking the work into an hour at a time. Recalling use of sources can be challenging when content has gone through multiple revisions. Give this process your best effort to honor the knowledge and contributions of colleagues in your field.
Step 1: Meet with the Project Manager
Meet with your Project Manager to develop a timeline and deliverables for this pass through your chapters. Read this unit before your meeting.
You can determine, with your Project Manager, what your goal will be depending on your starting point. For example, if it will take you the entire month to backtrack and identify the sources of your content, then you should focus on that priority so that we are not violating other peoples’ open licenses, or plagiarizing their work, when we publish your book.
If you’ve kept track of your sources then you are positioned to spend your time getting your License and Attributions and References sections ready for future readers. Make it easy for the next person by following the guidelines below.
If your attributions and references lists do not yet reflect the equity lens of this project, add at least one new source (via attribution or citation) that diversifies the voices represented in your chapter. The challenge will be to fully integrate a new source into a paragraph, spotlight, or subsection, without reworking the entire chapter at this late stage of the project. Proceed carefully: your revisions must stay aligned with your learning objectives, key terms, and other chapter elements already in place.
The section Attributions and Citation Lists Through an Equity Lens describes how this work connects to the project’s criteria for success. The Research Consultant can help you find relevant sources that can be smoothly incorporated into non-superficial changes. Budget in the time it takes to connect with support roles and receive their input.
Step 2: License & Attribution Section Cleanup
Each H2 section ends with an H3 section titled “Licenses and Attributions for {Name of Section}.” Systematically review these sections for organization, completeness, consistency, and license compatibility to make them easier for future readers to use.
Please read Attribution Review, below, to see exactly how to clean up your License & Attribution sections.
Step 3: Citation and Reference List Cleanup
Systematically cross-check your in-text and reference list citations, and resolve any formatting errors, to make sure that your references are ready for future readers.
Please read Citation Review, below, to see exactly how to clean up your citations and reference lists.
