Proofreader
Proofreaders review textbooks for accuracy after import into Pressbooks for the Open Curriculum Development Project. Please read Unit 0 for an introduction to the entire project.
Textbooks are usually 8 chapters plus supporting documents. Proofreaders receive a stipend of $1,750 per book. The deadline for proofreading is one month from the start date.
The Proofreader checks for the following:
- Chapter landing pages
- Table of contents numbering is formatted 1.1, 1.2, etc.
- Navigation instructions are below the table of contents.
- Nothing else is on this page.
- Chapter and section numbering and naming conventions
- Numbers in section titles are correct.
- Recurring section names are consistent.
- Header formatting:
- Headings 1, 2, 3: Use Title Case
- Heading 4: Use sentence case
- No headers past H4.
- Author and license metadata for chapters and sections match the license and attribution information.
- Box, sidebar, and features are used consistently for recurring elements.
- Tables are not wider than header column + 4 body columns.
- References sections do not have stray line breaks.
- Key Terms are bold on first use and have glossary function applied the first time they appear per page after that.
- Check that the glossary popup is applied in a place that makes sense (especially for common words with multiple meanings, like “power” or “value”).
- Transcript and long description links are working and return the reader to the place they left off.

- External links include the destination format in square brackets. Avoid names of companies (Pressbook, Canvas, YouTube, etc). We use:
- Streaming Video
- Online PDF, JPG, PNG, etc
- Download PDF, JPG, PNG, ZIP, etc
- Website
- Podcast
- Google Doc, Google Sheet, Google Folder, etc.
- Crossrefs and external links go to the correct destination.
- External links include the destination format in square brackets. Avoid names of companies (Pressbook, Canvas, YouTube, etc). We use:
- Figure captions start with the word Figure capitalized, and are numbered in order with the first number corresponding to the chapter number and the second number corresponding to the chronological order within the chapter.
- Figure numbers have a period after each number.
- Figure captions are one or more sentences that start with a capital and end with punctuation.
- Where the word “figure” appears in the middle of a sentence, it is not capitalized.
- Images are high enough resolution to be easy to understand.
- H5P
- The correct answer is correct.
- The question is working properly.
- The text is correct / matches the launch document.
