Message to Students
Research has demonstrated that people of color experience mistreatment, bias, racism, and discrimination inside and outside the criminal justice system, as well as at all stages of criminal justice. These experiences intersect with gender identity, social class, education levels, disability, and more. We will discuss the intersections of various identities throughout this chapter, but it is important to note that the primary focus of the book is the experiences of people of color and how one’s race and ethnicity will impact their experience.
For too long, the high cost of traditional textbooks has been a barrier to bringing more people into investigating important issues such as the relationship between race, crime, and justice. With this textbook being free and openly licensed, all students have access to learn about the history of the justice system, the disproportionate representation of people of color in the justice system, and the many reasons why we see such impact on communities of color.
This book was written directly for you, as the reader and student, to help you understand what we know about race, crime, and justice. Read this book with an open mindset and acknowledgment of your own identity in how it shapes your understanding of the information.
