Welcome!

trees, lake, and mountainWelcome to Evergreen – Oregon Stories for English Language Learners!

This book has 10 stories about interesting people, places, and things all around Oregon. Each story has a picture, a video, self-correcting exercises, and discussion and writing prompts. The stories come from ESOL News Oregon, a free local news site for students of English as a second language.

Why is it called Evergreen? An evergreen tree stays green all year. Similarly, an evergreen story remains interesting for a long time. In other words, it doesn’t quickly become “old news”.

We hope this is a fun way to learn more about Oregon while practicing English.

About ESOL News Oregon

Since 2018, this site has provided multi-level news stories from around Oregon. Three new stories (one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced) are published each week during school terms. Each story features an image, graded text, and self-grading exercises as well as citations for original source material. Some articles also include audio recordings. All stories are retained in searchable archives, making it easy for instructors to find even more “evergreen” news stories tied to topics in their classrooms. Except where noted, all content is licensed under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 Creative Commons license, and instructors are welcome to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute content for educational purposes without the need for asking permission.
