Book Description

This universally accessible text provides students with a foundational understanding of the changing experiences and needs of contemporary families in the United States. The influence of social structure as well as the impacts of difference, power, and oppression on family outcomes is emphasized.

Using an intersectional lens and placing the diversity of families at its core, the text prepares students with a range of majors and career paths to use their sociological imaginations, identify privilege and oppression, practice inclusion and take part in increasing equity for families, whether at the professional level, the personal level or both.

Needs are defined not only from the well-known hierarchy of needs, but also from the Indigenous view of needs within cultural perpetuity. Theoretical foundations from sociology, psychology, human development, critical race theory, and anthropology are integrated throughout the text.

Students will access learning objectives and key terms with definitions for each chapter. “Going Deeper” invites students to explore curated topics more deeply.

Instructors have access to tools to create assignments and class activities including hands-on activities and reflective questions in each chapter which appear in the text. In addition, chapter slideshows,  questionnaires that measure students’ understanding of chapter objectives, and summative assessments are available.
