5.1 Chapter Overview

5.1.1 Standard 14 from “Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals”

Human service[s] professionals are aware of social and political issues that differentially affect clients from diverse backgrounds.

In Chapter 4, we discussed the poverty and social problems that affect many people in the United States, as well as social welfare programs that help individuals and families. In Chapter 5 we will begin to look more deeply at families, and at health and health care settings.

It is important for human services professionals to be aware that social problems and political issues can affect different populations disproportionately and in diverse ways. Standard 14 reminds us that we need to pay attention to the macro view of these problems and issues even when we are working 1:1 with a client or patient. We must practice cultural humility and be aware especially of populations in marginalized groups, or who have less power, experience change, social problems, and political issues.
