Exercise 9.1 Drawing a Profile of a Real Person – Step One

This exercise will be the first step in creating the final profile drawing for exercise 9.2. You need to find a real life person who is willing to sit down for you for a while. You will first create the basic profile template from this chapter.  After you are finished with the template, ask the person to sit for you. You will then need to add facial features, such as the forehead, nose, lips, and chin, to create a full line drawing of your model’s profile.

Materials needed:

  • Pencils – 4H, HB
  • Erasers – white and gray

Time to complete: 20 minutes

Instructions:

  • Use one half of your large drawing pad, you will now have two areas that are 18×12 inches. The other half will be used for exercises 9.3 and 9.4. Remember, one half of the drawing area will be for exercises 9.1 and 9.2 and the other half will be used for 9.3 and 9.4.  Exercises 9.1 will be the template profile drawing (side of head) and 9.3 will be the self portrait template only (facing towards you).  Exercise 9.2 will be a finished drawing based of the template for 9.1 and drawing 9.4 will be a finished drawing based off of template drawing for 9.3.
  • The height the drawing should be 18 inches for both, since your head is taller than it is wide.
  • Draw the template the same size as your model. Most people’s heads are around 8-9 inches tall, so each triangle used in the template will be roughly half this amount. Make sure the head is centered with the drawing area and there is enough room at the nose and top and bottom. If your model has a lot of hair on top of their head, you may need to make adjustments or use a full sheet of paper.
  • After you have drawn the basic profile template, draw the facial features (i.e. forehead, nose, lips and chin) to create a full line drawing of your model’s profile.
  • Add the neck and shoulders.
  • Add the side profile of the eyes and ears in their correct locations.
  • You will need to have the full template visible, including triangles and tick marks. The full line drawing of your model’s profile needs to be visible, along with the eyes and ears on the paper.
  • Do not turn in just the profile or just the template.
  • Take a photo when you finish both 9.1 and 9.3 since these are both the first step (template) of each drawing. Exercises 9.2 and 9.3 are the finished drawings and will be handed in as a separate image file.
