Exercise 9.4 Self Portrait Drawing – Step Two

This exercise is a continuation of exercise 9.3. For this drawing, you need to add shading and details to further develop your drawing. Try to give your self portrait a three dimensional look with shading. Play around with the lighting to help produce a good contrast between light and dark.

Materials needed:

  • Pencils – 4H, HB, 4B, or woodless graphite stick
  • Erasers – white and gray
  • Stump for shading

Time to complete: 120 minutes

Instructions:

  • Continue developing your self portrait drawing. Erase any portions of the template not needed prior to starting.
  • The shading will need to be done with the stump. Try to give the shading of your face a smooth blended look.
  • Add as much detail as you can.
  • Take a photo of the finished drawing and hand it in with the rest of chapter 9. This drawing may be handed in with 9.2 if they were done on the same page.
