Exercise 9.2 Drawing a Profile of a Real Person – Step Two

This exercise is a continuation of exercise 9.1. For this drawing, you need to add shading and details to further develop your drawing. Try to give the model a three dimensional look with shading. Play around with lighting to help with the contrast between light and dark. It helps to have the model in a dark room with one strong light source from a side. Try not to have model washed out with light from many directions. Shadows will help with contrast for your shading.

Materials needed:

  • Pencils – 4H, HB, 4B, or woodless graphite stick
  • Erasers – white and gray
  • Stump for shading, if needed

Time to complete: 60 minutes

Instructions:

  • Continue developing your profile drawing. Erase any portions of the template not needed prior to starting.
  • The shading used can be any method you wish, however, the stump works best for since it leaves a soft blended look which works well for skin.
  • Add as much detail as you can.
  • Take a photo when you finish both exercise 9.2 and 9.4, these will be the finished drawings of both the profile and portrait.
