How many different verb tenses can you use in one short paragraph?

Choose one of the topics below (or choose your own topic).

Write for about 10 minutes.

Try to include as many different verb tenses as you can in one paragraph.

Topics:

  • Your first job
  • Your first day at college
  • Your first romantic date
  • Your first day as a new parent

How many different verb tenses were you able to use? If it wasn’t many, don’t worry. This was only a challenge. It’s rare for one paragraph to have many different verb tenses. However, it’s useful to know how and when to use them all, especially in academic writing.
